                                                                             Meeting Minutes 8/30/09

PRESENT:  Rob Kriegshaber, chairman; Rona Goldstein, Dixie Council director; Jerry Emanuel, AZA advisor; Deborah Salzberg; Cheri Shapiro; Naomi Farber; Becky Lourie; Ian Picow; Nancy Wasserman and Rachel Barnett.

PROGRAMS:  Rob went over the schedule of programs for Dixie Council (listed on the AZA home page).  There are about 16 Columbia members going to the dance in Charleston this weekend.  We've hired a 36-passenger bus from Capitol Bus Lines to transport the kids.  Augusta is not teaming up with us this trip.  Cost of the bus is $45 per person whether it's a one way or round trip for the kids.  The bus will leave NO LATER than 4:30 Friday afternoon and will leave the Charleston JCC around noon on Sunday.  Becky Lourie will collect money and checks for the bus.  Hannah Goldberg will chaperone the trip riding the bus.  A question arose about parental supervision in Charleston.  The kids are home housed and some Columbia kids said they never saw a parent during the weekend last year.  No one has received a phone call from a Charleston family this year telling parents where their child is staying.  Rona said the Charleston parents have received notification about what their responsibilities include while out-of-town kids are staying at their homes.

SCHOLARSHIPS:  Rob said we get $3,000 from the Federation and around $2,000 from a fundraising letter sent to the community around Passover.  The money is used to subsidize transportation and to provide scholarships to conventions and summer programs.  There are two types of scholarships:  The merit scholarship is for members who have done things for the chapter or council.  The second scholarship is need based.  Both are limited to the total amount set aside and carry a maximum $200 award per child.  The committee will always work with parents who are in need.  Just contact the committee chairperson.

OFFICERS:  Rob, no longer having children in the program, asked for volunteers to step forward to chair the committee.  He has agreed to co-chair.

DIXIE COUNCIL REPORT:  Rona explained that BBYO is no longer an agency of B'nai B'rith International.  After the split BBI continued funding BBYO but on June 30, 2008 they cut off all financial support.  The end result is that Dixie must now provide the funds to operate.  The council needs $40,000 a year to continue programing as we have been and to have a full-time director.  Money must be in hand NO LATER THAN December 1.  All four cities in the council, Augusta, Charleston, Columbia and Savannah, have been asked to raise money.  Rona asked for fundraising suggestions.  The committee has been formulating plans to overcome any deficit and will put those plans into operation soon.  It was also suggested we solicit former members to help financially.

ADJOURNMENT:  There being no further business, the meeting was adjourned at 2:15 p.m.

                                              Meeting Minutes 8/17/08

TEEN UPDATE:  Emily Levinson (BBG N'siah) reports the chapter has fun, organized programs each month.  They currently have 10 active members.   Nathan Rubinger (AZA Moreh) said the chapter meets every other Wednesday and they're trying to get everyone re-registered by Labor Day.

Rona Goldstein said there might be problems re-registering at www.b-linked.org.  Rona will handle membership registration if there's a problem at rgoldstein@bbyo.org. The Labor Day dance in Charleston is September 5-7.

Transportation:  The Ritters will ride the bus to Charleston.  We still don't have numbers.  AIT/MIT/LTI convention will be held at the Bob Cooper 4-H camp in Summerton, S. C. September 24-26.  This convention is for new members to BBYO (AIT/MIT) and those who want leadership training (LTI).  Southern Region convention will be held Nov. 7-9 at Mountain City, Ga.  We'll team up with Atlanta Council.  We need a bus to take us to convention and we need an adult on board.

CONVENTIONS:  International Convention - in New Jersey over President's Day weekend; Spring Convention - March 27 - 29;  Columbia's Dance Weekend, MBA & AZAA - January 16 - 18.  This convention will include an AZA basketball tournament and programs for BBG (Mind, Body and Attitude);  Savannah's dance date has not been formalized yet;  April 17 - 19 Tri-Region convention including Dixie, Atlanta and Cotton States regions.

SCHOLARSHIPS:  There are two types.  (a) Need (up to $400) and (b) Merit (up to $200)  Rob will mail out forms for need scholarships.  This year we honored 6 of the $200 scholarships.  The board may also contribute to transportation if the bus prices increase.  If there aren't enough participants parents may have to drive.

MISCELLANEOUS:  Rona said the growing power of the individual cities will be the focus of the year, to bring BBYO programs in each city and a focus on the community.  She said there is a program for 6-8th graders called "Teen Connection."  Membership in BBYO is usually $75 per year but for $149 a member can sign up for all four years.  The March of the Living, one week touring the concentration camps in Poland and the following week celebrating Israel's independence day in Israel will be held during the school year in April.  For more information contact Rona.

Jerry said there are still coupon books available at $20 each.  They're good until the end of the year and are filled with discount coupons (buy one, get one free).  Both chapters have websites (there's a link to BBG on this one).  BBYO memorabilia is on the walls and in the showcase of "The Zone" at the JCC.
